Big Rig Collision Traps Driver—Police Arrest Driver on Suspicion of DUI

March 21, 2012 - According to reports a collision with a big rig caused a driver to be trapped, who was later arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence. According to California Highway Patrol Officer Gabe Montoya the big rig accident occurred at approximately 11:35 p.m. Tuesday night in the southbound lanes of the 55 Freeway. The accident happened in the vicinity north of Victoria in Costa Mesa.

California Highway Patrol Officer Montoya said that the accident involved a big rig and a Toyota RAV4. CHP officials believe that the driver of the Toyota struck the back end of the big rig and became trapped underneath it.

The driver of the Toyota was transported to an area hospital, his injuries were not released. CHP Officer Montoya said that the driver was arrested at the hospital for suspicion of driving under the influence.

The collision caused the No. 2, 3 and 4 lanes of the 55 Freeway to be closed until approximately 1:05 a.m. the California Highway Patrol said.
