Highway 91 Crash Causes Tanker Truck to Explode

May 29, 2010 (by Horatio Algren) According to reports a collision that caused a tanker truck explosion on Highway 95 closed the freeway for approximately eight hours Friday.

The accident that was reported at approximately 10:30 a.m. Friday on one of California’s busiest freeways backed traffic up for miles in Riverside, Orange and San Bernardino counties.

The collision involved a tanker truck loaded with 8,800 gallons of gasoline, another truck, a Mitsubishi a sedan and a Honda, causing the tanker tuck to overturn catching on fire.

According to the California Highway Patrol the big rig truck collision occurred in the eastbound lanes of the 91 Freeway in Carona. This was a chain reaction collision said California Highway Patrol Officer Maurice Walker. The initial crash involved another truck and a Mitsubishi sedan and the driver of the tanker truck was taking evasive action to maneuver around the crash when the driver lost control. The tanker then struck a Honda causing it to flip over and explode into flames.

According to CHP officer Walker the impact of the truck forced the Honda over the center divider, where it was then struck by two vehicles traveling in the westbound lanes. Three people were transported to the hospital with minor to moderate injuries and the driver of the tanker truck was not injured according to the California Highway Patrol.

The traffic according to CHP officer Walker the traffic was backed up on the arterials and freeways and with Memorial Day weekend traffic there was more traffic. The carpool lane and two other lanes will be closed until the California Department of Transportation inspects the damage and makes repairs that might be needed. The California Highway Patrol closed the eastbound lanes of the freeway at Green River Road and the westbound lanes were closed at the 71 freeway for safety reasons after the tanker truck rolled over.
