According to reports a tractor-trailer accident injuring as many as 27 occurred in the Fort Tejon area.
California Highway Patrol Officer Scott Jobinger in Fresno stated it was assumed the big rig lost its breaks on the Grapevine downgrade into the Central Valley. The crash involved nine vehicles in the Fort Tejon area near the emergency truck ramp at approximately 12:52 p.m.
It was reported there were 27 people injured, some of the injured motorists were airlifted by helicopter to the Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills located in Los Angeles. Officer Jobinger stated there were no fatalities reported in the accident.
The multi-vehicle crash closed four northbound lanes of the freeway in to the San Joaquin Valley. Traffic backed up as far as Fort Tejon and Lebec, which was approximately eight miles of backed up traffic. Motorists traveling northbound were detoured east at Route 138, then on a 50 mile detour through Lancaster and Tehachapi. Traffic was also detoured north to Bakersfield on routes 14 and 58.
